The material could be hazardous if it has any characteristics listed below:

  • Does the SDS show DOT Regulated?
  • Is the container a cylinder?
  • Does the package have diamond shaped (hazard) labels?
  • Is it a flammable or non-flammable gas?
  • Is it in an aerosol can?
  • Is it a petroleum product?
  • Is it a paint, ink, or dye?
  • Is it flammable?
  • Does the material contain a name ending in ENE? (i.e. Benzene, Toluene, Xylene, etc...)
  • Does the material contain a word ending in CIDE? (i.e. Pesticide, Herbicide, Fungicide, etc...)
  • Does it have the word acid on the item?
  • Is it a battery or equipment containing batteries?
  • Is it acidic or caustic?
  • Is it explosive?
  • Is it corrosive?
  • Is the flash point below 141ºF (60.5ºC)?
  • Is the phrating 3.5 or above 8.5?
  • Is there an LD50 or LC50 rating or a toxic characteristic?
  • Does it contain a marine pollutant?
  • Is it a medical specimen?
